What does John have to do with Christmas? (Luke 1:57-80)

So, Luke writes this book to Theopholis to communicate that Jesus is The Messiah. If this is the case then why not merely mention that John is born rather than talk about this his birth and his parent's reaction to the birth? Why not skip to Jesus? Why is John named the prophet of the most high? What is unique about John's ministry?
