Why Pity a Plant? (Jonah 4:1-11)

The city of Nineveh is a city of human independence and self-rule. In many cases this would be the ideal dwelling for fallen man. Imagine seeing a place like this thoroughly transformed, and the joy that would bring to anyone who was a part of this. However, Jonah is not one who has joy, but intense sorrow. In fact, he cares more for a plant than the city. Why is this so wrong? Why is this so short sighted? Why is this such a sinful elitism?
